What you do
You run the airline, not the cockpit. Every decision an airline's management makes is yours:
- Found it. Choose a name, a two-letter code, colours and a home airport. Your home sets your nationality, and with it your traffic rights and taxes.
- Get aircraft. Order new from the manufacturer, buy used, lease, or pay a broker to find one. Every type has its real range, runway needs, fuel burn, price and years of production.
- Plan routes. Pick a market from a map of where travellers want to go. The planner checks range, runways, traffic rights, gates, slots and crews, and shows what the route would earn.
- Fit cabins and set fares. Choose the seats for each class and fit them into the aircraft's real cabin, then price every route.
- Write timetables. Each route fits into its fleet's day; drag a journey to retime it and see how many hours each aircraft flies.
- Staff it. Pilots are qualified on one aircraft family, cabin crew train in weeks, and unions bargain for pay.
- Finance it. Borrow against your credit rating, hedge fuel, sell shares to investors and list the company.
How the simulation works
| Part | What it models |
|---|---|
| Demand | Travel between every pair of cities, from their airports' traffic, population and wealth. Travel abroad is near shut across closed borders such as the Soviet bloc, and high-speed rail competes from the year each line opened. Extra seats fly empty instead of creating passengers. |
| Passengers | Travellers connect across whole networks and choose on fare, frequency, journey time, comfort, service and reputation, not price alone. |
| Flight paths | Every flight follows real airways, with departure and arrival procedures from the current navigation data, around closed airspace, and with the seasonal winds on long routes. |
| Aircraft | Each aircraft is an individual airframe that ages with hours and cycles, goes in for checks and can be modified: hushkits, winglets and freighter conversions in the years they were offered. |
| Airports | Runways take a set number of movements an hour, busy airports need slots, curfews hold, and airports that closed hand their airlines to their replacements, such as Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok in 1998. |
| Fuel | Flights buy fuel at the airport's price. Hedges fix the price for a share of your fuel; supply contracts trade a commitment for a discount. |
| Events | The Olympics, the football World Cup, World Expos and the Hajj draw travellers to their host cities. |
Online and multiplayer
Every airline in a world flies in the same market, so the passengers you win are passengers another player lost. The business side is covered on airline management game.
- Rankings compare market value, profit, punctuality and reputation, so a small, well-run airline can beat a large one.
- Shares of listed airlines trade on an order book. Shareholders elect the CEO, and a company can be taken over.
- Alliances join networks for connecting passengers.
- Worlds each set their own era, pace and rules. A season opens with a few days to join, and every airline starts together with the same capital. Tournaments award prizes to the best airlines, and members can host private worlds for their friends.
Play at your own pace
An established airline keeps flying its timetable between visits, for days at a time. Each world's pace is shown beside its clock: ×24 is a game day every real hour. The game runs in any modern browser on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install.
Free to play
Every world and every airline is free, and nothing you can pay for helps you win. Membership adds rank insignia, private worlds and leasing companies; other paid extras are cosmetic.
